Initial Ideas

Urban/suburban myths in recent US horror
My initial idea is to find a selection of recent US horror films, which have elements or a basis of urban/suburban myth. My three focus films will be The Ring, (Gore Verbinski, 2002), The Blair Witch Project, (Eduardo Sánchez and Daniel Myrick, 1999) and Sinister, (Scott Derrickson, 2012). My stimulus film will be The Ring as this is the film with the most specific cultural myth. In this project, I will be looking at the origins of the myths and how they inspired the films and also the different scare tactics used to create the horror in these films.

Relevant trailers:

The Ring, (Gore Verbinski, 2002)

The Blair Witch Project, (Eduardo Sánchez and Daniel Myrick, 1999)

Sinister, (Scott Derrickson, 2012)

  1. What do you mean by modern horror ? What you could look at is the impact of the first horrors Nosfaratu Dracula Frankenstein from Warners during the Golden Age ? Maybe how this has influenced the monster or more modern horror ?

  2. I agree with Andy's suggestions. You need more focus here as the research will be very wide and difficult to manage otherwise. I think you might need to narrow to concepts of fear, or techniques used. Let's talk more next week.

  3. We talked today about narrowing the focus of this - we thought you should keep the focus on contemporary/recent US horror (say the last 15 years), and compare scare tactics in these films. It's possible that you will narrow this further to being about the use of 'urban/suburban myths in recent US Horror'. Your focus film might be Ring, with Blair Witch and Sinister
